You will have the opportunity to benefit from limited class sizes that allow the instructors to mentor to you with their real-world guidance and advice.

Class Levels: Courses have been categorized into three levels.

Basic: Designed for students with limited photographic experience or as a refresher course for experienced students.

Intermediate: Designed for students with additional experience.

Advanced: Designed for students with at least five years experience or those well rounded in most aspects of photography.



Intermediate to Advanced

Understanding and controlling light quality is at the core of all of Tony’s presentations. Attendees will learn how to see a unique perspective and not be afraid to push the limits of their experience and talents.

Tony will discuss all types of lighting and its tools in depth. Lighting tools include portable flash, studio strobes, sunlight and ambient light. Lighting applications include additive,subtractive, reflective and transmission. Each combination of tool and application will be shown and discussed in detail. Tony will discuss the importance of control in the digital capture and how a few seconds of extra time spent at time of capture can save hours in post production.

Tony always spends time discussing Light Quality as well as Light Quantity and how Light Direction plays a significant role in the resulting mood of an image.

Tony has been teaching lighting concepts, theories, and techniques for over twenty years and his week-long workshops on the topic always fill to capacity. In the past couple of years alone, Tony spoke to over 30,000 photographers worldwide on the topic of light control and his numerous youtube videos have topped one million views.

Tony has been a photographer, photographic educator, and an author his entire adult life. His photographic works have been featured in publications throughout the globe. While he has worked for some of the most discerning clients in the world, he is most proud being acknowledged and included in more than thirty-five photographic books by other photographers.Tony has photographed three U.S. presidents, The Millennium Summit Meeting of World Leaders at the United Nations, sports celebrities, almost 800 brides and grooms, and a handful of NASA astronauts. He is currently featured on as well as and alongside the world’s leading photographers, instructors and authors. He is also a featured artist at in a segment called In Celebration of the Black and White Print. Currently,Tony is the president of The Camera Craftsmen of America, a group of forty photographers worldwide.

Teaching almost exclusively about photographic lighting and imaging workflow, Tony passed a major milestone having taught more than 650 seminars and workshops. He has spoken in 48 U.S. states and numerous countries throughout the world including London,Glasgow, Dublin, Toronto, Vancouver, Mexico City, Australia, Italy, New Zealand, Dubai, Trinidad/Tobago, Germany, Sweden, and Nova Scotia. His Basic Studio Lighting book from publisher Random House (AmPhoto) back in 2000 has been popular worldwide and is the basis for numerous photographic college lighting courses as is the popular Nik Software: CAPTURED he co-wrote with Josh Haftel.

Published in 2016, Tony released two new books with publisher Amherst Media called Light and Shadow, Location and Studio Lighting Contro lsand embark on a fifteen-city workshop/lecture tour with Profoto in the USA market. When asked what he is most known for, he says “being just about the biggest Beatles fan in the world.”

Basic to Intermediate

Award-winning photographer Leslie Hoyt from Tulsa, Oklahoma,will show you how to create heirloom portraits that have a beautiful, classic style, yet are still very relevant for today’s modern families!

Leslie will walk you through the whole process:

Consulting with the family to insure the best possible session and sales

Lighting that is beautiful, flattering, and dramatic

Posing the group to show connection

Making sure every family member looks their best

Configurations of poses for variety and wall grouping sales

Editing the images to get the look you want

Showing and selling your work to your client

We will have a family and children to photograph, and if you want to shoot, bring your camera, portrait lenses, cards and a card reader. We will also have an opportunity to work on editing these portraits (or you can work on a photo supplied by Leslie) so feel free to bring a computer and Wacom tablet, and possibly an extension cord or power strip.


Leslie Hoyt, M.Photog., CPP

Award-winning photographer Leslie Hoyt has a boutique portrait studio in Tulsa, Oklahoma. She has earned her master photographer degree from Professional Photographers of America and is a Certified Professional Photographer.

Her passion is to connect with people and to tell their stories through images that portray them as they uniquely are. She works with families and children as they mark monumental moments in their personal histories, and she creates lasting images that evoke emotions and memories.

Leslie is fascinated with the technical side of photography,and cares a lot about the details-perfect light, posing, and composition-and loves the post-processing aspect as well. She is constantly striving to learn more about various aspects of the art and craft of photography by attending industry classes and seminars, and also enjoys judging photography competitions.

Leslie is a proud member of the Professional Photographers of America, American Society of Photographers, Professional Photographers of Oklahoma, and the Indian Nations Professional Photographers Association. She has been both INPPA and Oklahoma Master Photographer of the Year. Her work has been featured locally on magazine covers, and in Professional Photographer Magazine. Her family portraits were also seen on ABC's Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. Leslie received a Kodak Gallery award, and has created merit and loan images in PPA’s International Photographic Competition, where she has earned Silver, Gold, Platinum and Diamond medals in that competition. She has twice been a finalist at ImagingUSA for Children’s Portrait in the Grand Imaging Awards.

Back to the Fundamentals AND To Infinity and Beyond

Basic to Intermediate

DAY 1: Back to the Fundamentals

Gary and Kathy Meek of Hot Springs Arkansas will take you through the fundamentals to intermediate photography in this fun filled class of hands on learning. You will learn lighting, light direction, light ratios and metering. You will understand how to use light to enhance your subject. You will learn posing and how to make your subject portray the message that they want to send. You will learn what lens to use and how it affects the dynamics of the final image. You will understand how to use aperture and shutter speed relationships, not only to produce the proper exposure, but also to use as a creative tool.

You will learn the fundamentals of lighting and posing in the studio and then apply those principles to outdoor photography. You will learn the purpose of the main light,fill light, background light and hair light and fully understand the quantity,quality, color and direction of light.

Kathy will show you how to get the most out of your subject through her style of posing and then how to shape the subject using light.

You will want to bring your cameras, meters, tripod,portable lights, computer (loaded with Photoshop), card readers, Wacom tablet,etc as we are going to have a lot of hands on learning.

DAY 2: To Infinity and Beyond

Gary and Kathy Meek of Hot Springs Arkansas will take you to the next level in photography, from intermediate to an advanced level.

You will learn portrait design, composition, color harmony and balance. You will learn to see light that exist on location and augment it, when needed, by balancing the available light and the light that you bring with you. This class will take you from producing pictures to creating works of art.

You must have a good working knowledge of photography and your equipment to start this class. It is suggested for everyone to take the first segment “Back to the Fundamentals”before you start on this journey.

You will want to bring your cameras, meters, tripod,portable lights, computer (loaded with Photoshop), card readers, Wacom tablet,etc as we are going to have a lot of hands on learning. We plan to go on at least one location session and you will be doing hands on photography and post production work.

Not only will you learn to paint with light but you will learn to sculpt with shadows so that you will become a true portrait artist.

Gary and Kathy Meek of Hot Springs, Arkansas own and operate Gary’s Studio of Photography in Hot Springs.

Gary has been teaching Certification Preparation Classes for over twenty-five years. His educational degree is in math and physics.

Both Gary and Kathy have received their Master of Photography, Photographic

Craftsman degrees and are Certified Professional Photographer. Gary has received his Educational Associate and Honorary Educational Associate from American Society of Photographers. They are Approved Photographic Instructors. Gary and Kathy have received their Associate Fellowship, Fellowship and Senior Fellowship Degrees from Arkansas Professional Photographers Association. Gary and Kathy have been awarded Life Membership in Arkansas Professional Photographers Association and Southwestern Professional Photographers Association. Gary is a Life Member of Professional Photographers of America. Gary and Kathy have both received a Fellow of Photography degree in conjunction with Professional Photographers of the Ozarks. They are both International Photographic Judges.

Gary and Kathy are both active in State, Regional and National Associations.

Gary served on the Board of Directors of Professional Photographers of America 1999-2007, is a Past President of Arkansas Professional Photographers Association, a Past President of Professional Photographers of the Ozarks and was President of Southwestern Professional Photographers Association, for two consecutive years and is currently serving on the SWPPA Board. Gary is a councilor for Professional Photographers of America. Kathy is a Past President of ASP, Past President of Arkansas Professional Photographers Association and a Past President of The Southwestern Professional Photographers Association. Kathy has just been elected to serve on the Board of Directors of Professional Photographers of America.

Gary and Kathy have received numerous awards from the state of Arkansas.

Gary has received numerous print awards in all categories. He has received the Best of Show and been named Photographer of the Year many times. He has received the Arkansas Distinguished Service Award and The National Award from Arkansas Professional Photographers Association and Southwestern Professional Photographers Association. He has had the highest print case total score in Southwestern Professional Photographers Association. Kathy has received numerous print awards, and Best of Show - several times! Kathy has been named Arkansas Photographer of the Year. Kathy has also received the Distinguished Service Award from Arkansas Professional Photographers Association and the National Award from APPA, SWPPA and ASP. They have both won several regional awards in addition to these. They both have been consistent in having images accepted internationally for display at Professional Photographers of America’s National Conventions. They have both had images go into the international and ASP loan collection.
